THE ESTABLISHMENT
It was founded in 1962 (with the resolution of the Gover-nment Nr.172, date 14 May 1962). In 1949 the Directorate of Hydrometeorological Service was created, under the jurisdiction of the Institute of Sciences. Since 1973 HMI is included in the system of Academy of Sciences of Albania.

FIELDS OF ACTIVITY
Hydrometeorological Institute is responsible for:
* Monitoring of hydrometeorological elements, air and water quality and levels for all the territory of Republic of Albania
* Quality and quantity evaluation of water and climatic resources of the country
* The HMI provides the governmental and public administration, the weather sensitive, especially for unusual atmospheric phenomena, branches of economy, society and electronic media with the hydromete-orological information and studies.
Archiving of data gathered by hydrometeoro-logical national network ( composed actually by 256 stations)
* International obligations in consequence of membership in World Meteorological Organization and other international organizations
* Drawing up new methods for observing, evaluating and disposing of hydrometeorological information; controlling and calibration of hydrometeorological instruments
These duties are realized based upon the gathering and evaluating of hydrometeorological information from a national network spread all over the territory of Albania according to WMO standards.
Based on gathered and evaluated data from this institute, are carried out many applicative studies, technical reports for the projection of hydro energetic and hydrotecnic working as hydro centrals, ports, water-supply and a number of monographies and studies.
The Hydrometeorological Institute carries out its activity in three main fields: Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment.

In the field of Meteorology
* Monitoring of atmospheric processes based on observing, gathering, transmitting and evaluating of meteorological elements
* forecasting of tendency of atmospheric processes short-term forecasting up to 72 hours, mid-term forecasting.
* Creating of climatic and agrometeorological data bank
* Climatic change studies
* climatological and agrometeorological studies

In the field of Hydrology
* Monitoring of water resources of Albania upon based on observing, gathering, transmitting and evaluating of hydrologic elements for surface waters, ground waters, marine waters
* Creation of hydrologic data bank
* hydrological studies on watershed, regional and national scale.

In the field of Environment
* monitoring of pollution of atmosphere, surface and ground waters
* studying of tendency of air and water quality parameters for all the territory of Albania
* studying and researching for models and pollutant transport based on interaction of different atmospheric processes with different origin pollutants ( natural or anthropogenic )

There are a total of 105 employers of which 3 Professors, 10 have the scientific degree Doctor and Prof. Assoc., 5 Masters, 7 Assistants, 12 Specialists, 52 technicians and workers for maintenance of the network, and 16 employees in administration.
